Mythica is a lesser-known indie fantasy series from the mid-2010s, but it has a dedicated fan base. This is because the series received funding from its fans. It had a direct-to-video release and its creators describe it as the most ambitious fantasy project ever.
There are five Mythica movies for a total runtime of 8 hours and 23 minutes. It’s an ambitious endeavor, but factoring in snack and bathroom breaks, this is the perfect series to binge if you’re seeking an all-day affair.
However, each movie is only about an hour and a half long if you prefer to consume your media in smaller increments. This length makes watching the Mythica movies in order manageable regardless of your preference.
The series follows a two-part plot arc and has a strong role-playing game feel with its characters and their quest.
The story begins with a club-footed slave, Marek. But like all fantasy stories, there is more to Marek than meets the eye. That is because she might be the only person born with the innate power of necromancy.
The series follows Marek on a perilous journey. During which she must learn to control her necromancy magic so that it won’t corrupt her. Along this journey she acquires a group of seemingly opposing adventurers as they embark on a quest.
This gang has the standard cast of fantasy figures that fans have come to know and love. There is a witch, a brute, a thief, and a healer.
They begin their quest to rescue the sister of a healer priestess. But, of course, the journey evolves into something much bigger than anyone anticipated. They soon find themselves in a fight against evil to save the land from a lethal plague of the undead.
Mythica’s Kickstarter Origins
As mentioned, the Mythica series partially received funding from its fans. Its creators used the popular platform Kickstarter to raise funds for the project.
It’s important to note, however, that the Kickstarter campaigns only ever began in post-production. The funds were to cover the costs of editing and visual effects.
The independent production company, Arrowstorm Entertainment, has used Kickstarter to fund 16 different projects. Most of the projects are films within the fantasy and science-fiction genres.
For the first Mythica film, Jason Faller and Kynan Griffin of Arrowstorm Entertainment were the producers and the director was Anne K. Black. All three wrote the screenplay and filming took place on location in Utah.
A Quest for Heroes was a success on Kickstarter, as were the subsequent four films. It received $94,294 in funding from 1,527 backers.
The next film, The Darkspore, received $81,099 in funding from 1,382 backers, while the third film, The Necromancer, received $89,843 in funding from 1,478 backers. The fourth film, The Iron Crown, saw a spike in funders and backers from the first film and raised $97,867 from 1,736 backers. Finally the fifth film, The Godslayer, was the most successful Kickstarter campaign in the series with $131,087 in funding from 2,107 backers.
Unfortunately, this success did not see a repeat when the company began a fundraiser for a Mythica VR game. This was a shift from their previous film projects and into the video game world.
The premise was a virtual reality role-playing game. It was to be interactive with the option to play alongside your friends or make new friends within the game.
The project had 659 backers who pledged $32,801 of an $80,000 goal. While the project wasn’t successful, there was still movement on the endeavor by the creators three years ago.
Will There Be Another Mythica Movie?
Unfortunately, a continuation of the Mythica franchise does not appear to be very likely for now. This is perhaps not surprising considering the timeline of the creation of the movies. All five feature films were filmed and released during a two-year period, and more than five years have passed now since the final installment.

However, it would have gone into the backstories of some of the favorite characters from the Mythica series.

Within the Vitalion Empire magic is under the control and regulation of the Wizards Guild. But this doesn’t stop renegade magicians from existing within the outlaws. They are an important member of any adventurer crew.
Next up is priesthood magic. This form of magic is from the Gods, or demons, that use a priest or priestess as their conduit. This is a tricky and unreliable form of magic as it is entirely dependent on the connection between the magical being and the worshipper, and Gods can be temperamental beasts.
Therefore, this form of magic can vary between being incredibly powerful or falling short during a critical moment in battle. An important distinction here is that the conduit does not have to have any innate magic of their own to become a worshipper and wield the power of the Gods.
Finally, there is the rarest and most dangerous form of magic: Necromancy. This is the ability that Marek was innately born with. This might make her the first and only person in history to be born with such power at their fingertips.
This form of magic is just what it sounds like. Wielders of necromancy steal energy from living things and can then release that energy however they choose.
This makes it a dark and powerful magic that comes with a double-edged sword. The cost of necromancy is that it can corrupt the soul of the practitioner.
The Darkspore and Lore
In addition to the magic system, the Darkspore plays a critical role within the Mythica universe.
The Darkspore is the remnants of the heart of a king from many thousands of years ago. Back then the Lich King Amun Kahn was intent on enslaving the people of the world and overthrowing the Gods. He even succeeded in overthrowing the God of the Forge, Tek.
But then, united in fear and grief, the remaining Gods destroyed Kahn. His heart, which had become crystalized by dark and malevolent power, broke into four shards.
Almost within the present day of the Mythica movies Szorlok, the antagonist within the series, discovered that with the Darkspore he would unlock the key to immortality and the ability to enslave everyone. Szorlok was aided by many in his search for the Darkspore, then turned on them at the last possible moment to unite the shards for himself.
However, Gojun Pye struck him down with the aid of three other wizards and saved the world from imminent destruction. The Darkspore shards were then sent away to four corners of the world in secret. But Szorlok is not so easily defeated, and this is where the Mythica movies begin.
The Characters
In addition to saving the world from Szorlok, Gojun Pye plays another important role within the series. He plays the role of a wizened mentor. Although he has become something of a recluse, he acts as a magical guide to Marek.
Szorlok also plays a role within the Mythica movies with an obsession to reunite the Darkspore shards. He also develops an obsession with Marek, and her power.
While we’ve already mentioned Marek and her critical role within the franchise, her crew is rounded out by three others that play an important role: Teela, Dagen, and Thane.

The thief of the group is the rogue half-elf Dagen who straddles both races and truly belongs to neither. He relies almost exclusively on his good looks, charm, and wit to get through life and doesn’t comply with the strict rules of the Thieves Guild. He joins the group when he is in need of a hasty escape from the town and its Magistrate.
The final member of the group is the brawn, or the brute, Thane. Once a formidable Vitalion soldier he now fills his days with drink and violence, but he steps in when Marek is nearly captured by Peregus Malister.
